Experience the heart of “Tabi-shibai” (Japanese Popular Theater), a vibrant tradition with over 300 years of history.
This high-energy, non-verbal performance is a spectacular showcase of traditional dance, stunning costumes, and dynamic action, all set to a fusion of modern pop and rock music.
A major highlight is the Onnagata—male actors who transform into alluring and elegant female characters.
Unlike traditional Kabuki, our theater offers an intimate setting where the performers and audience unite in a lively, electric atmosphere.
Don't miss this powerful live experience, a perfect and unique memory of your journey in Kyoto.

No Japanese required!
Enjoyable for everyone.

Feel free to take a break or use the restroom anytime.

Snap beautiful moments!
(No flash, no video, and no photos when signaled.)

But we highly recommend booking online to guarantee your spot!

Come as you are! Jeans and sneakers are perfectly fine.

Feel free to bring your own drinks and light snacks.
The magic doesn't end with the final curtain. After the show, the actors—still in their magnificent costumes and full makeup—will line up at the theater exit to personally see you off. This is the perfect chance to share your thoughts, exchange smiles, and take amazing souvenir photos together!

During the dance performance, you might see fans placing paper money or envelopes directly into the performers' kimonos.
This is called Ohana—a traditional and unique way to show appreciation for your favorite actors.
It is entirely optional, but joining in is a thrilling way to become part of the show!
Local Etiquette: For amounts under 10,000 JPY, it is traditional Japanese style to present the money in a beautiful decorative envelope rather than handing it bare.
You can easily purchase these special envelopes at the reception desk!
Pictures from our popular sister theaters in Osaka and Kyoto.
Originating in the Edo period, "Tabi-shibai" was born from Kabuki but evolved as theater for the people—vibrant, accessible, and purely entertaining.
While Kabuki became more formal over time, Tabi-shibai stayed close to its fans, focusing on excitement and fun.
The Gion Gofukuzo Theater, where this show is being performed, traces its heritage back to the legendary Ikeda Gofukuza in Osaka (est. 1892).
Together with our sister theater, Umeda Gofukuza, we are proud to be one of Japan's most beloved homes for popular theater.
